About Vietnam tea dust
Tea dust and fannings are the smallest fractions sorted out of black tea after drying: fannings are finely broken pieces, dust is a fine powder. Despite the name, dust is sorted, cleaned, graded tea with the same origin as the leaf grades. Because the particles are small and dense it brews fast and dark, gives full color with milk and sugar and packs more tea into a container than any leaf grade, so it is what goes into most tea bags, milk tea, bubble tea and tea extract. In Southeast Asia it is also sold as powder black tea, teh tarik dust, bubuk teh hitam or serbuk teh.
We supply eleven tea dust grades. Broken grades BPS2, BPS3, PS2 and PS3 keep visible leaf for strong tea bags and blending. Fannings F1, F2 and F3 give a quick, brisk infusion. Grade 1 is the fine blackish powder used for teh tarik, milk tea and boba, and Grade 2 the economical off-grade. PF and PD are CTC granules with a ruby-red, strong, malty cup. A 40-foot high cube container loads about 22 tons of BPS, 26 tons of fannings or PD and up to 28 tons of dust.
Our guide to Vietnam tea dust explains each grade, how to read a tea dust specification, which grade suits tea bags, milk tea or extract, container loading, packing and how to buy. For the leaf grades these fractions come from, see our orthodox black tea and CTC black tea.
